As some of you !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , I damaged the outer splines on my accords passenger CV axle. I picked up a re-manufactured one today and tried to get out all the shards I could (13/27, plus some really fine pieces). I'm wondering if my old CV axle is still okay, as it doesn't look terrible compared to the one I just bought. Pictures below for comparison.

I know the answer is probably still replace it, but I'm cheap and the new one is like $135 and I'm cheap.

I've seen worse, but I'd still stretch to the new axle if you can. The old one will fail eventually.

That might work for a bit, until you're backing out of a parking spot at full lock and the CV joint finally forces that circlip over what's left of the retainer ridge. Then, you'll hear a horrendous banging sound as the car stops moving because the axle has pulled out of the joint. $135 is cheap in my world of $400 Jetta axles and no quality aftermarket alternatives. Do it.

As I recall, somebody, don't remember who, told you last night you were good as there was no damage to the splines that actually drive the axle. If the lead in splines are good, which they appear to be. The ring is what holds the axle in place and it appears in good shape. I would put it back in and if it fits OK, run it. But, if you are unsure, replace it.

alright,I know I gave my $.02 earlier, but here's another option. Remove the circlip and have someone weld a new lip on the old axle. Then make sure to grind down all the channels and you should be good.

Hmm, if I had a welder that would probably work!
